Authentic Designs of Le Corbusier's work

From Cassina's website explains in details what characteristics each authentic piece of Le Corbusier furniture design should contain.

All the models in the " Cassina I Maestri" (Cassina Masters) collection, by merit of their artistic content and particular creative character, are protected by copyright, a legal institution that is universally recognised and safeguarded; legal protection is assured for the whole life-span of the author and for 70 years after his/her death  (or the death of the last surviving co-author).

Identifying Marks:

Each piece of furniture in the "Cassina I Maestri" Collection is indelibly marked with:

Signature of the Author
, whose copyright belongs to his heirs or trustees, the use of which has been granted exclusively to Cassina and which in the form of a trade mark, certifies the authenticity of the furniture;

"Cassina I Maestri" logotype, which incorporates the Author's emblem as used by him as identification on his drawings.

Production number
which serves to place the item in the chronology  of production, and tallys with the "Identity Card" (which bears the same number).

Identity Card:

Each piece of furniture in the "Cassina I Maestri" collection comes with its individual guarantee bearing the same number as is indelibly marked on the furniture itself. The pieces are numbered progressively and contain information about

  • The material used
  • The constructive criteria adopted
  • The way in which it is made
  • Year of the original design and the year of production
  • Biographical details of the Master, a bibliography
  • List of Museum and Galleries where the piece has been on show

Reconstruction Process:

The point of departure for the reconstructions of the models of the "Cassina I Maestri" collection is in the sixties with a meticulous in depth analysis of the meanings and intentions of the original project.

Cassina has exclusive access to all the prototypes, drawings, sketches and other documents, and these are carefully studied in consultation with the heirs and those who collaborated with the Masters.

The Realationship with the Heirs:

In 1964, when Le Corbusier was still alive, Cassina  signed the first licensing agreement and began the work for reconstructing the first group of models - LC1, LC2, LC3 and LC4 - which went into production in September 1965.
Other models were introduced respectively in 1974, 1978 and 1985 and 1998 (LC6, LC7, LC8, LC9, Casiers Standard, LC10-P and LC11-P, LC5.F).

In 1978, in accordance with Fondation Le Corbusier and in collaboration with Charlotte Perriand, the entire collection underwent a revision.  On that occasion the coloured versions of the models already in production were introduced, using colours in keeping with shades envisaged the original palette of Le Corbusier.

An uninterrupted chain of renewals of production binds the contract of 1964 to that currently existing between Cassina and the Fondation Le Corbusier, the testamentary heir and prestigious institution which keeps and attends to the archives of Le Corbusier's drawing and design, which in collaboration with Pernette Perriand and Jacqueline Jeanneret, heirs of the co-autors.

The Co-Authors:

In 1922, Le Corbusier began working in the new rue de Sèvres atelier with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret with whom he shared research projects and design criteria in a profound and life-long professional relationship.

In October 1927, the pair decided to draw on the contribution of a young architect who had already begun to establish a reputation on the architectural scene of the time: Charlotte Perriand. Their collaboration lasted through to 1937.
and the level of quality attained.
